Xardwen - New Theory Team Member

Hi all,

I’m Andrew (or Xardwen, as I go by on various parts of the interwebs : P ) and I’m very excited to join the Theory subset of the Thrive development team :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m currently in the process of wrapping up my Ph.D. in Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California - Berkeley, and I’m hoping I can apply at least some of what I’ve learned over the course of my graduate degree to help out wherever and however I can. While my thesis research mostly has to do with CRISPR-Cas gene-editing and protein engineering for biotechnology applications, I also have some background in astrobiology and origin-of-life research, which seems like it might be especially relevant here :alien:

On the non-academic side of things, I dabble in writing science fiction and 3D modeling alien critters in Blender for fun, and I’ll happily take any excuse to get some practice in for either of these areas as a contributor :love_you_gesture:

Please feel free to point me wherever you feel I might be able to make myself useful- I’ll be taking some time to look around as well :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello, excited to have you. A lot of the day to day discussion happens on the discord if you haven’t joined. We generally strive for scientific accuracy (although this sometimes has to be comprised for gameplay), so feel free to call us out on things that bug you. Also feel free to make some gameplay suggestions possibly inspired by your knowledge. Beyond that programmers often consult theorist for advice on how to implement something in an accurate way.

Glad to see you on here now that I’ve finally figured out the backend of stuff.

Like GameDungeon mentions, theory is often consulted on feature implementation, and is always welcome to recommending adjustments and features. Though the Microbe Stage is rounding out, so it’s good to be mindful of that. I also recommend joining the Discord if it is convenient to you, as that is where most of the day-to-day interactions go on. The development forums are more for larger topics, and activity can be very erratic.

I’ll list some things that stick out in my head which could be tasks you focus on. Like I mentioned in the email, work on Thrive is entirely volunteer-based, so don’t take these as official tasks at all. If you want to work on other things, you have all the freedom you want. However, new users tend to drift away because they don’t know where to start.

So if you’re looking for something immediate, perhaps these tasks could be viable:

Thriveopedia Editing - We have a “Thriveopedia” in game, which is where players can refer for scientific background and general information on processes, organelles, and other pieces of information. Specifically, proteins and organelles each have their own page in the Thriveopedia, but they aren’t really fleshed out. If you are interested in adding to this information, you can edit the developer wiki pages of these organelles and that information can find itself in game (Category:Organelles - Thrive Developer Wiki).

Potential for Worldbuilding - In reference to your background in science fiction, astrobiology, and origin-of-life research, I’d be interested to hear your input on if you think we can involve a bit more worldbuilding when it comes to our Thriveopedia. We have a section of the in-game encyclopedia which is focused on your world, but it’s pretty flat:

You’ve been involved in some pretty cool speculative evolution writing and have extensive knowledge of the topic, so I’m curious to see if you think there’s room for that here. Maybe we can add some spice and flair to the Thriveopedia.

Note that we’re a sandbox, procedural game, so we generally avoid pre-defined stories. And also note that this something I’ve just now thought of, so I don’t want to give you the impression that this is something that is of the upmost of priority to our roadmap and guarantee that it will be implemented. But you have a great background in this sort of stuff, so I’d be curious to get your perspective. Maybe if something interesting comes up, it could be a worthwhile feature to implement.

Beyond that, feel free to go whichever way you please. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Welcome to the development team!

Awesome, sounds good! I’m already on the Discord, it’s been fun chatting with people there so far :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I’ve been dropping a few links on there to various art/science/gaming topics that I felt might be inspirational to the dev team, I can keep up with that if it seems useful :+1:

As for specific design and gameplay suggestions, so far I have a few ideas I’d be interested in running past people- I’ll look into making a post or two on here once I’ve given them a bit more thought :slightly_smiling_face:

Sweet, thanks Deus! :love_you_gesture: It just so happens that I also really enjoy editing wikis in my spare time (both “serious” wikis like Wikipedia and wikis dedicated to various sci-fi/fantasy game/film/book franchises), so I’d be happy to take a look at the Dev Wiki and see if there’s anything I can contribute :+1:

Re: the Thriveopedia, that also sounds like an interesting opportunity… it would be really neat if there were some way to procedurally generate a text-based description of the player’s world, either just as a paragraph or two summarizing the planet/moon’s characteristics and ambient conditions, or as a progressively evolving natural history document that gets added to as various milestones are reached during gameplay. I imagine this is something that could quite effectively be achieved by implementing AI/LLM tools, perhaps trained to write in a certain style fitting the overall vibe of the game; alternatively, maybe there could be pre-written blocks of text that could be mixed and matched depending on the world characteristics and in-game events.

In any case- agreed, these seem like good places to start! I’ll take a closer look and see if I can help out :love_you_gesture:

Just checking as I haven’t seen any new theory members recently, there is a separate dev discord that isn’t the same as the community one.

Oh gotcha- yeah, I think I’m only on the Community Discord so far, I’ll get on the Developer one :+1:
